 Laptops/Computers

Unlike in most schools, laptops are now the norm in college - most people have one. While very useful, they are not essential as Trinity has thousands of computers freely available for student use. Most of these are on campus but there is also a computer room in Trinity Hall with ten or so computers [Upstairs in Oldham House in the far right corner]. Since access to these computers is available to all students, there can often be a queue to use them at peak times. For those of you who can stand (or like!) Macs its advisable to check the Mac rooms on campus when the PC’s are full as they rarely fill up.

  • Buying:

Many people bring their own laptops and PC’s from home done! For everyone else there’s Mastercard!

The students Union in College have negociated a deal with Dell for students- see isservices.tcd.ie/purchase/student.php

For Mac lovers there is a 10% discount (just for saying your a student) on all Macs bought      directly from Apple (Stores or online).

  • Using:

The College network (Internet, notes, student zone etc.) is generally great, once you get on it.

The College network only supports a limited number of operating systems (The Name you see on your screen when you start up your computer!)-

PC - Windows 2000, Windows XP Professional, Windows XP Media Center Edition, Windows XP Home Edition, Windows Vista.

Unfortunately XP Home is not supported and must be upgraded to XP Pro to log onto the network.

Apple Mac - OS X

Downloading via Peer2Peer (Limewire/Bearshare etc.) or torrents (Bittorrent etc.) cannot be performed on the college network due to the use of a proxy server   , however, local internet cafes can satisfy file hungry downloaders .  Though movies and TV shows can be viewed online without downloading, try using google to find sites or try www.tv-links.co.uk , alluc.org etc.

      TV’s

Every apartment gets a tv at some stage in the college year, when and how is up to them.

Tv’s can be rented from Gallagher Rentals in Rathmines.Tv’s can be purchased from family, friends, online or in any electrical store, of which there are hundreds in Dublin (e.g Expert Electrical in the Swan Centre or Gallagher TV across from Tesco in Rathmines).

Some flatmates pitch in together others let one person buy it and effectively get a free tv
